The Board of Directors of the Honolulu Zoo
Society announced that Keith Patterson has become the new Executive
Director. He replaces Barbara Thacker who stepped aside to resume
management of the Society’s volunteer program. A native of England,
Patterson has a wealth of experience in non-profit management, community
relations and special event planning. • • • Familian Northwest
(FNW), Hawaii’s largest distributor of plumbing supplies and products,
announced that John J. Banquil has been promoted to Branch Manager of its
Kokea location. As branch manager, he will oversee daily operations
including sales, purchasing functions, warehousing and advertising and
marketing. • • • Chaney Brooks announced two appointees to
lead its recently launched American Homes division. James Muratsuchi has
been named senior vice president of the company’s reorganized
Residential Group and will continue to serve as head of its Government
Group. Chaney Brooks also selected Renee Blondin Nip as principal broker
for the new American Homes division. • • • Caroline
Matsu-moto Kauhane has joined Hawaii Modular Space, Inc., Hawaii’s
largest supplier of factory-built modular buildings, as an account
executive. She will lead HMSI’s storage container sales and rentals
division. Kauhane has worked for the Hawaii Department
of Transportation in public affairs, as well as for Stryker Weiner
Yokota Public Relations Inc. • • • Melvin Y. Kaneshige, senior vice president
and chief operating officer of Outrigger Enterprises, Inc., was named the
91st president of The Rotary Club of Honolulu this week. The Rotary Club
of Honolulu was the first Rotary Club in Hawaii, receiving its Rotary
International Charter in 1915. Today it has more than 400 members and is
referred to as the “mother club” in Hawaii and a pace setter for
service to the community. Honolulu Rotarians have focused much of their
recent efforts on programs for youth and support to public education. • • • Sharon Shiroma
Brown, senior vice president at First Hawaiian Bank, was named president
of the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, the bank’s charitable arm. Brown
succeeds Lily Yao who recently retired after 30 years of service. • • • Parents And Children Together (PACT) has
received two grants to help the less fortunate in our community. The
Hawaii Children’s Trust Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation has
awarded PACT a $40,000 grant to assist children with speech therapy needs.
The funds will pay for a speech language pathologist to work with
speech-delayed children in our Early Head Start/Head Start program. PACT
also has received $15,000 from the Teresa F. Hughes Trust Estate to assist
special needs children within Oahu Healthy Start programs. PACT’s
Healthy Start Program is designed to support parents of newborn and
toddlers who are facing life challenges. It promotes positive parent-child
relationships to enhance family functioning and to promote healthy
childhood growth and development. • • • The Committee to Save the Center announced
that the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. has generously
donated $1.8 million to help save the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
The main building at the center will be renamed the Harry & Jeanette
Weinberg Community Building. • • • The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is
seeking volunteers to participate in the 2003 Jerry Lewis Labor Day
Telethon Catch-A-Cure program. Volunteers will be collecting funds on
Saturday and Sunday August 30th and 31st at various Oahu locations. For
