By The Way... Donald Bowman has been appointed the resort
manager at Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Hawaii. As of July 2004, Mr. Bowman
is responsible for overseeing all operational departments at this luxury
property, which has earned the reputation as one of Hawaii’s premiere
destination resorts. Bowman’s most recent post was as director of rooms
at Mandarin Oriental, San Francisco where he was responsible for 75
colleagues in various operational departments including guest services,
housekeeping, front desk and information technology. Prior to that, Bowman
held various consecutive positions such as front of house manager, systems
manager and front desk manager during his seven-year tenure at Elbow
Beach, Bermuda (a Mandarin Oriental resort.) As one of 10 privileged
graduates that were selected by Forte Hotels in London, Bowman started his
hotel career in the management trainee program at Forte Crest Bloomsbury
and the Hyde Park Hotel (now known as Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park,

calling cards to soldiers of the 411th Engineer Battalion of the United
States Army Reserve. The donation was presented at the opening general
session of the command’s Family Mobilization Conference at Bellows Air

Ma. • • • Continental Airlines has donated four round
trip tickets to Washington D.C. for the Hawaii winners of the 2004
Congressional Art Contest. It is the eighth consecutive year for
Continental Airlines to provide transportation for high school level
winners and their chaperones. The winners were selected by Hawaii
Congressman Neil Abercrombie and Ed Case to represent Hawaii in the
national ceremony, which will unveil winning artwork by high school
students from across the United States. • • • NBC Universal has selected Honolulu-based PR
firm IKAIKA Communications to handle public relations duties in Hawaii for
their much-anticipated new television series “Hawaii.” President Mona
K. Wood and partner Kristin Jackson are handling the account. They will
report directly to Curt King, vice president of NBC Universal Television
Studio, and work with Jamie French, senior press manager for NBC
Publicity. Wood and Jackson will also be working closely with the
series’ cast and crew on a daily basis. IKAIKA Communications will
handle all media relations in Hawaii. The producers and writers of the
police drama are dedicated to building the film and television industry in
Hawaii by hiring a largely local crew and casting local talent in

Aquarium has promoted Mark Heckman to director of education, where he will
be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the education department.
In addition, he will continue to oversee the aquarium’s impressive
schedule of award-winning education programs and community outreach. A
13-year veteran of the Waikiki Aquarium, Heckman most recently served as
the community enrichment program coordinator, responsible for classes and
activities for youth and adults. He was also instrumental in developing
such popular aquarium education programs as Marine Science Overnights,
Mystery at the Aquarium, Small Fry Parent/Child Programs Coral Spawning
Evenings and Marine Science Expeditions. Prior to joining the Waikiki
Aquarium, Heckman was an instructor in marine science at the University of
Hawaii – Hilo. |
