Grill, a casual, retro style South Pacific-style restaurant in Waikiki,
has named Aaron Tangonan the marketing, sales and public relations
coordinator. His duties will include the coordination of all marketing and
sales activities for the Waikiki restaurant. • • • Bright Light
Marketing Group, Inc., a locally owned, full-service public relations and
marketing firm, has promoted Cheryl Y. Tamura to Director of Public

Club awarded a $10,000 check through the Henry and Jeanette Weinberg
Foundation for repairs and maintenance of the YWCA Camp Kokokahi. The
money will be used to for restoration of the camp site and cabins which

has been promoted to business development officer at Hawaii Pacific
Federal Credit Union. In her new position, she will be responsible for
recruiting new companies to join the credit union’s field of membership. • • • The Hawaii Wellness Institute will offer a
five-week class on “Redirecting Children’s Behavior.” The course is
designed to teach practical and conscientious parenting skills in a
supportive and non-judgmental environment while helping parents become
calmer and more confident in raising their children to be responsible and

National Cancer Institute, the UH Cancer Research Center of Hawaii has
joined the nation’s largest project designed to curb cancer in Asian
Americans. The funding will be used to conduct fact-finding and needs
assessment of cancer in Hawaii’s immigrant Asian populations. • • • The Royal Garden
at Waikiki has appointed Mieko Crans as Sales Manager for the 207-room
boutique hotel. Crans brings more than 20 years of travel industry
experience and more than 10 years of specialized experience in the hotel
industry in Hawaii. • • • Veteran radio broadcaster Art Bell, the host
of Hawaii’s KHVH AM 830’s Coast
to Coast AM, announced that he will retire at the end of the year. The
regular fill-in host, George Noory, will replace Bell starting the first
of the year • • • The Hawaii Association of Broadcasters, Inc. has
awarded $92,000 in academic scholarships to assist students in their
pursuit of college study and their career goal of working in the broadcast
industry in Hawaii. • • • Marvin A. Fong, President of Market City,
Limited, has been named Chair of the Board of Directors for Arcadia
Retirement Residence, Hawaii’s premier continuing care retirement
community. • • • The Hawaii Humane
Society’s 2003 Pets In Paradise calendars are now on sale
at the society’s customer service desk. The calendar features 14
full-page pictures, chosen from more than 1,280 photos of Hawaii pets
submitted for the calendar. • • • Academex Systems, Inc., an educational
consulting, school formation and management corporation, has announced the
September 2003 opening of Island Pacific Academy in Kapolei. Island
Pacific will be the first school in a network of schools created by the
British Columbia, Canada-based Academex Systems. It will be West Oahu’s
first private, co-educational, non-sectarian, non-profit college
preparatory school for students in pre-kindergarden through grade twelve. • • • The Starbucks
Foundation in Seattle has awarded Windward Community College a $10,000
literacy grant for its popular Star Poets program, which encourages
creative writing through poetry. The grant will fund a series of workshops
led by teacher and writer Susan Lee St. John at public schools and other
community sites on Oahu for students, teachers, parents and community

of Kahala during a ceremony held in early December 2002. • • • Henry Katsuda, Pre-sident & CEO of
TheoDavies Food Service Group, operators of Pizza Hut/Taco Bell in
Hawaii, announced that Jojo Chow has been named
general manager of the new Pizza Hut/Taco Bell store at Manoa
Marketplace. Chow currently manages the Taco Bell restaurant in Pearl
Harbor and has been with the company since 1993. • • • The Hawaii
Alliance for Arts Education received a grant from the Ame-ricans for the
Arts and Elefanten Children’s Shoes. The grant for $5,000 will help
support the early education programs that provide access to meaningful
arts education that will enhance the academic, social and cognitive
development of young children. •

Hawaii Hotel Association (HHA) will be changing its name to the Hawaii
Hotel & Lodging Association (HHLA) in 2003. The name change allows the
association to include a new segment of the industry that includes
timeshares and vacation clubs. •
• • The University of
Hawaii Art Gallery exhibition catalogue A Tradition of Excellence recently
won a silver medal in the Excellence in Print 2002 competition. Sponsored
by Spicers Paper, it recognizes the highest standards in lithography. The
second place award in the national competition of more than 600 entries
recognizes the catalogue for its excellence in print design.

have opened the Ohana Osteopathic and Wellness Center in Kailua. Dr. Ferri
is a licensed physician who utilizes a traditional hands-on osteopathic
approach. The center is geared toward family practice, osteopathic
manipulation, sports medicine, and healthy lifestyle counseling. • • • For the second
year in a row, Honolulu ranks first among the nation’s largest cities in
the 2002 Digital Cities Survey conducted by the Center for Digital
Government. Honolulu was ranked first in government websites and first in
the use of technology to deliver government services. • • • Hawaii Pacific University recently awarded
