$20,000 was recently raised for the
American Dia-betes Association through its bicycling fundraiser
event called Tour de Cure presented by Kraft Crystal Light. One hundred
ninety riders participated and helped raise awareness and funds for local
programs and research efforts to find a cure. Money was raised through
participant entry fees and also by pledges. All funds raised remain in
Hawaii to help with local diabetes education and community outreach
programs. • • • Bright Light
Marketing Group, Inc. announced Sher-rie Coronas has joined the firm as Senior
Account Executive, bringing 16 years of experience in public
relations, advertising and event coordination. Coronas’ most recent
marketing position was with Old Republic Title and Escrow, where her
responsibilities included the development of promotional materials for the
company and local real estate agents. Coronas holds a bachelor’s degree
in journalism from the University of
Hawaii at Manoa. • • • The Allstate Foundation has awarded a grant
of $10,000 to Junior Achievement of Hawaii. Funds will be used to support
the expansion of the organization’s programs to 500 students in Hilo,
Maui County, and on Oahu. The grant will fund 20 Junior Achievement
classes in a variety of elementary, middle and high schools. The program
fits in perfectly with the Allstate Foundation’s economic empowerment
focus area. Junior Achievement educates and inspires young people to value
free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their
lives. The organization’s mission is to ensure that every child in
America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system. • • • Winners at Work received a $10,000 grant
from the Public Health Fund Committee of The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii
in support of its new Community Integration Project (CIP) in Kahuku and
North Shore areas. CIP will provide employment and community access
services for people with disabilities, including special education
students, in the Kahuku/North Shore region of Oahu. The program also
represents a first step in the major expansion of Winners at Work’s
programs to rural Oahu, with dedicated staff and the establishment of an
office in the Kahuku/Hauula area. •
• • Paul Ah Cook, who
joined Desert Island Restaurants as general manag-er of Ruth’s Chris Steak
House in Restaurant Row in April, has been promoted to director of
operations for all three Ruth’s Chris Steak House locations in Hawaii
– Restaurant Row in Honolulu, Front Street in Lahaina and The Shops at
Wailea on Maui. Prior to joining Ruthıs Chris, Ah Cook was director
of operations and general manager of Sam Choy’s Restaurants and Let’s
Eat Hawaii Product Line and Catering Company. He also served as general
manager of Michel’s at the Colony Surf. He is a graduate of McKinley
High School and the University of Hawaii. • • • The Honolulu
Academy of the Arts has inaugurated a special free admission policy for
Active Duty, Retired, and Reserve Military members and their families in
all branches of the service – Coast Guard, Navy, Marine, Air Force and
Army. The Academy offers free admission for military members and their
families on the first Sunday of every month during normal museum hours,

Manager, AT&T wireless as Three Outstanding Young Persons during the
35th Annual Hawaii Jaycees Three Outstanding Young Person A-ward banquet
held in November 2003 at the Plaza Club. The Three Outstanding Young
Person Award program recognizes and honors three outstanding individuals,
between the ages of 21 through 39, who exemplify the best attributes of
Hawaii’s young people. • • • Dr. Jeffrey Smith has joined Market Trends Pacific, Inc. as director of research and statistics. He brings 30 years of experience to the Honolulu market research firm company, with expertise in survey sampling, questionnaire design, tabulation analysis, and multivariate analysis.
