Get over yourself!” Imagine if we could all figure out when
we are dissolved in ourselves,
our ego, so that we could learn how to get over ourselves. Here are some
If we feel pride or shame, desire or aversion, hate or
anger, resentment or fear, it is all ego. If we hold ourselves above or
below anyone else, it is ego, regardless of why. If we polarize against
others, and it is not about a righteous cause, it is ego. Even causes that
we may think are righteous, but which really are about domination and
submission, these too can be ego.
These are the inner questions people need to ask themselves if
their personal, social or political struggles perpetuate the illusion of
separateness from the rest of humankind, because divisiveness and cupidity
(selfish attachment to one’s goals) are ego.
The self must be known, loved and then forgotten. It takes
uncompromising integrity to really know oneself, without one’s
perception being deluded by the enabling filters of subjective
gratification. Then it takes Christlike compassion to unconditionally love
oneself and others at every stage of development, not just when we
reach what we think is enlightenment. This does not preclude the
responsibility of correcting one’s lower proclivities, however. But
the most difficult step is the 3rd step, getting over oneself, or
forgetting ourselves so that Higher Power can work through us. I call it
“putting on our angel wings”.
